40 oz. to Freedom, Second pressing

Question: Hi. I just purchased a second pressing 40 oz. to Freedom CD on ebay for 100.00, the one that has the Skunk Records label and address on the back. I was just curious if this really is a hard to find CD, or if i got ripped off. The CD is in "like new" condition. Thank you.

Answer:

Well,... the simple answer is "no", you didn't get ripped off. That CD has "Get Out" on it so it's worth some money just for that.

However, I would have sold you a mint copy of that CD for about $75.00.

This is because of my sublime and collecting background. I have a bunch of that press & the real money is in the first pressings (There were 3).

The first press is very hard to come by and depending on which one you are trying to get, it could run you $500.00.

If you were just looking to get a "real" (or "OG") copy of "40 oz.", you did just that. But the story of the 40 oz. CD is just like sublime's story... long and somewhat hard to follow.

They made their CDs when they had money because they did it themselves. They were their own record label and didn't have a big name record company backing their merchandise yet.

So, when they got more money, they made more CDs. Simple as that.

When they made the first pressings, they shopped different CD vendors and told them that they would print ALL of their CDs with them if they gave them a STEAL of a deal on say... 500 or 1000 of them. Then, they would just move on to the next sucker. Robbin the Hood basically.

So, with the three different 1st pressings, they did different shit with each of them because they got them done by different suckers.

For instance, the first-first pressing has no barcode, is printed on an ALL SLIVER disk AND it says "Skunk 01%" on the matrix. This is, by far, the rarest sublime CD . The second-first pressing had a normal disc (way cheaper) but still had no barcode. And the third-first press had the same normal disc but it had a BARCODE.

The songs remained the same until they had to pull "Get Out" and remove some samples; most notably the Zeppelin stuff.

To get all of the pressings, you need to get real serious. There were a total of 6 different pressings before MCA got it's hands on it, and there was even a 7th release before MCA on Skunk Records that had everything removed. This was when they were in negotiations. It looks almost identical to the one that you have but "Get Out" is missing from the CD and the back insert.

Here is a picture of the first-first pressing so that you can get a feel for the difference. They made 1000 of these.

I hope this helps.
