"Doin' Time" - Tricked Out Life Sentence Remix

by George Harris last modified Sep 11, 2010 01:38 PM

Question: Hey GMan! I have a question for you about the Doin' Time Bootleg Tricked Out Life Sentence Remix. There are lyrics I haven't heard before. Near the end he sings "Ticka ticka tock I'm in the pen, I'll tell it to you gentlemen..." and so on. Then after a bit he starts "I get on..." 3 piece harmony, yadda yadda. Is this the only track where these lyrics can be heard? It would be nice to hear em' without the remix. Thanks!!

Answer:  Hey Heidi,

Sorry for the slight delay, I was back East on a Family Emergency so I couldn't get to this until now.

In any case, the short answer here is "Yes". That's the only place to hear those vocals; with or without music. You can; of course, look on YouTube for someone who has remastered it without the music and made it an a cappella.

Originally, that "remix" or version of "Doin' Time" was not even available ANYWHERE! Then, sublime decided to mix things up a bit and start releasing "Alternate" takes of songs to people who were planning on doing (or actually doing) "remixes" of songs; so that,..... not only would it be a "remix",... but it would also contain unreleased or unheard Bradley snippets.

These types of alternate versions; especially of "Doin' Time", exist because of the numerous takes that were recorded of the songs on the "S/T". By now, we all know that Bradley was pretty messed up during that period (after having gone to Mexico to get a massive stash of drugs) so,... songs weren't even "Songs" in some cases.... They were just snippets. Brad would hold it together for a few minutes and then nod off or just space out & walk out of the room, etc. This would leave just an "improv" or two (or three) that would normally be thrown onto the cutting room floor.

But, in the case of Bradley and the recording of the "S/T", it was a whole different story. All of these "mistake takes" were salvaged because they would all need to be compiled to make (or complete) a whole "song". Sad, but true.

As far as even "hearing" that remix goes,.... The First time you could hear the "Doin' Time" ("Tricked Out Life Sentence" Remix) was on the "Louie Dog Box Set" CD & the "Louie Dog Spotted" 12" vinyl; both of which were "Promo Only" and never sold (or "released" per se). So, for a long time,... most didn't even know that this version existed. When the "masses" finally got a chance to hear this version was when the "Doin' Time" Swedish 6 Track CD was released overseas and (via the internet) quickly made it's way over to America.

However, the "Swedish 6 Track" CD release was still very obscure so it wasn't until the release of the "EUTS" Box Set that pretty much everybody got to hear this awesome version of "Doin' Time".

Good luck in finding an a cappella version of the song & I hope this helps!

"All Sublime All The Time"

Peace,

GMan
